Job Description
We have just submitted the Portsmouth Local Plan for examination and are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Planning Policy team. This could be either as a Senior Planning Policy Officer or as a Planning Policy Officer. Both roles offer the opportunity to contribute to the Local Plan examination and shape the future of our communities through effective planning and policy development.
Job Responsibility
Senior Planning Policy Officer: Play a strategic role in shaping the future development of the city
Conduct research and analysis to support preparation of the Local Plan and other key planning documents
Respond to changes in planning legislation
Lead public consultations
Work closely with colleagues, Council services, and elected Members
Represent the Council at planning meetings, sub-regional groups, and public inquiries
Provide guidance to other officers
Contribute flexibly across the planning department
Support Development Management when necessary
Planning Policy Officer: Assist in the preparation and review of planning policy documents
Monitor development in the City
Compile statistics for reports
Conduct research
Help to deliver public consultations
Liaise with internal teams and external partners
Represent the Council at planning events
Help prepare evidence for public inquiries
Contribute across different areas of the planning department
Requirements
Senior Planning Policy Officer: Educated to Masters level in Town and Country Planning or equivalent
Post-qualification experience in planning policy
Understanding of sustainable development
Experience in community consultation and participation
Excellent research and analytical skills
Sound knowledge of current planning legislation and procedures
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Project management experience
Ability to manage own workload
Collaborative team player
Commitment to maintaining up-to-date professional knowledge
Planning Policy Officer: Educated to degree level in Town and Country Planning or equivalent
Good understanding of planning legislation and procedures
Capable of conducting research and analysis
Ability to summarise outcomes with clarity and accuracy
Good communication skills
Ability to build partnerships with other organisations
Ability to manage own workload
Contribute effectively within a team
Willing to maintain up to date professional knowledge
