We are looking for a Senior Payroll Specialist to lead payroll operations for an organization in Baltimore, Maryland. This contract opportunity is ideal for a detail-oriented candidate who can oversee complex payroll activity, maintain compliance, and deliver reliable support to employees and leadership. The role requires strong judgment, process improvement experience, and the ability to manage payroll functions accurately in a fast-paced environment.
Job Responsibility
Full cycle payroll processing to ensure employees are paid accurately and on schedule across recurring payroll cycles
Monitor payroll records and related documentation to maintain compliance
Oversee time reporting, leave tracking, and payout calculations while resolving discrepancies in a timely manner
Manage year-end payroll activities, including tax reporting, W-2 preparation, and other required payroll documentation
Investigate payroll exceptions, deductions, and employee concerns, providing clear guidance and effective resolution to complex issues
Partner with finance and other internal teams to support audits, strengthen controls, and improve payroll workflows and policies
Review payroll processes regularly and recommend operational enhancements that increase accuracy, efficiency, and service quality
Requirements
3+ years of experience in payroll supervision, payroll administration, or a closely related role
Hands-on experience with full-cycle payroll processing, including bi-monthly payroll operations
Working knowledge of multi-state payroll practices, payroll tax requirements, and year-end reporting processes
Experience handling W-2 preparation, special payroll deductions, and employee leave considerations such as FMLA
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Effective communication and customer service skills, with the ability to address payroll questions professionally and clearly
