Job Description

An established mortgage organization is seeking an experienced Senior Mortgage Loan Underwriter to join its team. This role is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and underwriting residential mortgage loan applications to ensure compliance with agency, investor, and regulatory guidelines. The ideal candidate is a strong independent decision-maker with deep knowledge of government and conventional underwriting standards and the ability to manage a high-volume pipeline in a deadline-driven environment.

Job Responsibility

  • Underwrite residential mortgage loan files in accordance with FHA, VA, USDA, FNMA, FHLMC, and internal guidelines
  • Independently assess borrower risk, including income, assets, credit, and collateral
  • Review loan documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements (TRID, RESPA, CFPB)
  • Analyze automated underwriting system (AUS) findings and perform manual underwriting when appropriate
  • Communicate with loan officers, processors, and other stakeholders to resolve conditions and deficiencies
  • Manage underwriting pipeline to meet closing timelines and rate lock deadlines
  • Review appraisals and ensure properties meet program and investor requirements
  • Provide guidance and expertise on underwriting scenarios and complex loan structures

Requirements

  • 3+ years of mortgage underwriting experience (5+ years preferred)
  • Experience underwriting FHA, VA, USDA, and conventional loan products
  • FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to independently assess credit risk and make sound underwriting decisions
  • Experience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong knowledge of mortgage regulations and compliance standards
