The Credit Risk team protects Shopify while enabling merchant growth by managing merchant credit exposure, predicting and intervening to prevent financial distress, and recovering losses when things go wrong. We make smart, fast credit decisions across Shopify’s expanding payments and financial products ecosystem using AI-powered detection, portfolio analytics, and human judgment. As the Sr. Manager, you’ll own credit risk operations end-to-end: building a high-performing team, driving an AI-first culture, and shaping reserve and enforcement policy. You’ll monitor merchant portfolio health and concentration, ensure network compliance, and stay ahead of emerging risk patterns across the merchant lifecycle.
Job Responsibility:
Build, lead, and develop a high-performing team of credit risk analysts
push them to hone their craft and leverage AI tools to expand team impact
Own the team's outcomes and key metrics, balancing loss rates with merchant friction/experience
Use data to identify at-risk merchants early, build enforcement programs grounded in evidence, and intervene with low friction wherever possible
Define clear, well-documented policies that enable auditable, transparent decision-making and serve as the foundation for scalable automation
Partner with data teams to develop automation and detection models that cover the full surface area of loss prediction, not just optimizing existing coverage
Partner with product teams to help merchants understand when they're at risk and provide self-serve pathways to get back on track
Build credit risk assessments for new product launches and market expansions, scoping exposure and designing risk-mitigating controls from the start
Build high trust through direct feedback, clear expectations, and addition/subtraction when needed
Collaborate across other Risk, Compliance, and Legal teams to ensure a unified view of merchant risk
Requirements:
Leading and developing operational teams in credit risk, recovery, or financial services—ideally within ecommerce, payments, or large-scale digital platforms
Managing credit exposure, reserves, and financial loss mitigation at scale, with strong analytical skills and sound judgment under pressure
An AI-first mindset. You champion automation and AI workflows and are familiar with using AI tools to accelerate work
Direct communication—you say the thing, give clear feedback, and don't avoid hard conversations
Acting as the key operational partner to product, engineering, and data teams
Managing operational health for high-volume teams, such as SLAs, quality, throughput, and performance on large-scale case management platforms
Engaging senior stakeholders and executives to communicate risks, align on priorities, and deliver on objectives
Nice to have:
AI tooling (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, etc.), SQL, and other data analysis tools
Familiarity with ML/detection systems and how to partner with engineering teams
