Job Description

The Revenues and Benefits Service has a vital role in the billing, collection and recovery of Council Tax, Business Rates and Sundry Debt. We are looking to recruit three experienced and motivated Senior Local Taxation Officers to join our Revenues team within Shared Transactional Services. The successful candidate(s) will report to either the Council Tax or Business Rates Team Leader.

Job Responsibility

  • Processing taxation amendments, discounts, exemptions and reliefs
  • Undertaking billing and recovery actions in line with statutory requirements
  • Proactively reviewing arrears and progressing advanced recovery where appropriate, including preparation for bankruptcy and charging order cases
  • Liaising with the HMRC Valuation Office, Enforcement Agents, and internal teams
  • Responding to customer enquiries while maintaining high standards of customer service
  • Managing your own caseload within a performance-driven revenues environment

Requirements

  • Detailed knowledge of local taxation legislation and recovery processes
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex legislation accurately
  • Confidence in making informed decisions on the appropriate next stage of recovery action, including write‑off decisions where applicable
  • Strong communication skills with a customer‑focused approach
  • Experience of effectively handling internal and external calls across Council Tax and/or Business Rates
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritise reactive and ad‑hoc work
  • Confidence in using multiple IT systems
  • Experience of using MRI One Revenues and Benefits (Academy) would be an advantage
  • Appointment to this post will be subject to a DBS check obtained through the Disclosure and Barring Service
