We are seeking an experienced Senior Lawyer to deliver high-quality legal advice and representation within a collaborative local authority legal services team. This role offers the opportunity to manage a complex caseload while supporting team leadership, contributing to service development, and helping to deliver effective and innovative legal solutions across the organisation.
Job Responsibility:
Providing clear, practical legal advice and representation across a broad range of local authority matters
Managing a complex caseload with minimal supervision
Undertaking and/or managing advocacy where required
Advising members, officers and committees on legal and procedural matters
Drafting, reviewing and interpreting legal documentation, reports and agreements
Supporting the Monitoring Officer in matters relating to legality and procedural compliance
Supervising and mentoring junior members of the legal team where required
Assisting with allocation of work and supporting effective use of team resources
Contributing to service improvement initiatives and reducing reliance on external legal support
Delivering legal guidance and training to internal stakeholders
Requirements:
Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX eligible to practise in England and Wales with a current practising certificate
Significant post-qualification experience managing a complex legal caseload independently
Experience providing legal advice within local government or a comparable public sector or regulatory environment
Strong drafting, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide pragmatic legal solutions
Experience supervising or mentoring junior colleagues
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Advocacy experience or demonstrable aptitude for advocacy
Experience working with electronic case management systems or digital working environments
Nice to have:
Experience advising governance, committee or regulatory functions

Understanding of budget considerations and managing external legal spend
