The SQL Server DBA – L2 Support role is responsible for providing overnight operational support for SQL Server database environments. The role focuses on proactive monitoring, incident management, deployment execution, and routine maintenance to ensure high availability, performance, and stability of database systems. The resource will work within defined SOPs, runbooks, and escalation frameworks to support business-critical database operations.
Job Responsibility:
Monitor SQL Server database environments using tools such as PRTG, Azure Monitor, and other database monitoring platforms
Review system alerts, acknowledge incidents, and perform initial triage and resolution based on defined SOPs and runbooks
Monitor database instances, SQL Agent jobs, backups, and system performance metrics to ensure optimal operation
Execute database deployments using tools such as Azure DevOps, Redgate, DB Maestro, or other approved deployment solutions
Perform routine database maintenance activities including integrity checks, index maintenance, and backup validation
Validate deployment outcomes and ensure successful completion of maintenance activities
Monitor and manage Azure VM health and associated database infrastructure components
Perform database refreshes across lower environments as per defined processes
Escalate complex issues related to database performance, availability, or failures to L3 DBAs or client teams
Support service requests, incident tickets, and operational tasks within SLA timelines
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, backlog items, and automation opportunities within the database platform
Participate in database-related projects as assigned
Requirements:
8+ years of experience in SQL Server database administration or support
Working knowledge of SQL Server architecture, database health monitoring, and performance basics
Experience with monitoring tools such as PRTG, Azure Monitor, or equivalent
Understanding of database backup strategies, job monitoring, and maintenance plans
Familiarity with deployment tools such as Azure DevOps, Redgate, DB Maestro, or similar
Ability to execute tasks based on SOPs and troubleshoot common database issues
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
Good communication skills and ability to work in a shift-based support model
Nice to have:
Exposure to Azure-based SQL environments (Azure SQL, Managed Instances, or SQL on Azure VM)
Basic scripting knowledge (T-SQL, PowerShell)
Experience working in ITIL-based support environments
Prior experience in production support or managed services engagements
