Job Description:

Our client, a fast‑growing and highly stable distribution company in the Baltimore area, is seeking a Senior Inventory Accountant to support and enhance their inventory accounting function. This role is critical for ensuring accurate inventory valuation, improving process integrity, and strengthening overall financial reporting. The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in inventory and cost accounting, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to partner cross‑functionally with Operations, Procurement, and FP&A to drive efficiency and accuracy.

Job Responsibility:

  • Manage inventory accounting processes, including compliance with industry‑specific regulatory requirements
  • Reconcile inventory quantities, balances, replenishments, and related adjustments
  • Oversee inventory valuation, including analysis of returns, expirations, shrink, and adjustments
  • Conduct monthly inventory close activities such as reconciliations, roll‑forwards, and journal entries
  • Analyze inventory performance and prepare schedules for reserves, slow‑moving items, negative margins, and write‑downs
  • Coordinate physical inventory counts and cycle counts across multiple operating locations
  • investigate discrepancies and recommend corrective actions
  • Ensure accurate accounting for intercompany inventory transfers
  • Prepare, review, and document journal entries and account reconciliations related to inventory activity
  • Partner with Operations and Procurement to improve processes, enhance reporting accuracy, and strengthen internal controls
  • Collaborate with FP&A to support forecasting, margin analysis, and inventory planning initiatives

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required)
  • 4+ years of accounting experience, with a strong focus on inventory or cost accounting
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, modeling)
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem‑solving skills
  • Background in distribution is highly beneficial
  • Experience with mid to large ERP systems preferred
  • Proactive mindset with the ability to work cross‑functionally and drive process improvements

  • Provide detailed root cause analysis for variances and maintain inventory KPI’s and metrics
  • Build new and enhance existing processes to improve accuracy and efficiency in monthly close
  • Work closely with management from procurement, operations and warehouse teams on matters relating to purchase order creation, receiving and shipping
  • Review monthly account journal entries and reconciliations for finished goods, in-transit inventory, freight and duty asset accruals
  • Conduct monthly general ledger account analysis to identify trend variances or potential misstatements
  • Comply with company identified key SOX controls and maintain the required levels of documentation and review support
  • Oversee the entire Inventory team, with direct management of the Inventory Supervisor
  • Maintain integrity of tooling and mold inventory and conduct ROI analysis
  • Maintain inventory aging’s and reconcile prepaid inventory
