Senior Infrastructure Engineer with strong on-premise, VMware, and Microsoft Windows expertise to support and lead a major infrastructure refresh and OS upgrade programme. This role is non-cloud focused and will suit someone with deep experience in traditional enterprise infrastructure environments. You will play a key role in reviewing legacy Windows Server 2012 workloads, designing migration plans, and delivering upgrades to Windows Server 2019 on a new VMware host platform.
Job Responsibility:
Review and assess existing Windows Server 2012 environments and application dependencies
Design and implement migration plans to Windows Server 2019
Support migration from Cisco C240 M3 hosts to Cisco C240 M6 hosts
Deliver migrations within a VMware on-prem environment
Ensure service continuity, availability, and performance throughout migrations
Work within established change control and ITIL-aligned processes
Support and migrate core infrastructure packages including SCOM, PRIME, SIEM
Provide technical input into HA, resilience, and security considerations
Troubleshoot and resolve complex infrastructure issues across compute, OS, and networking layers
Requirements:
Strong understanding of TCP vs UDP, including differences between TCP and UDP, use cases for each, TTL behaviour
Solid understanding of DNS and its role in enterprise environments
Knowledge of High Availability (HA) concepts and implementations
Understanding of IDS vs IPS and where they fit within infrastructure security
Strong hands-on experience with VMware (vSphere) including core components included in a standard VMware deployment, VM lifecycle management, host and cluster considerations
Experience working with Cisco UCS / C-Series servers (C240 preferred)
Strong experience with Windows Server 2012 and 2019
Windows Server upgrade and in-place / side-by-side migration experience
Solid Microsoft ecosystem knowledge (AD, DNS, GPOs, services)
Experience working within formal change control
Understanding of a basic change control format, including risk assessment, rollback planning, impact analysis, approval workflows
Nice to have:
Experience in regulated or enterprise environments
Exposure to monitoring and security platforms (SCOM, SIEM)
