Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services. This position is a Subject Matter Professional providing key input to other organizations and stakeholders. The successful candidate will be a professional electrical engineer with extensive experience in datacenter electrical engineering, design, construction, and operations. Candidate will be responsible for the technical review, analysis and coordinating the delivery of complex Datacenter electrical systems, associated controls, and overall topology.
Job Responsibility:
Provide key input to other organizations and stakeholders
Be responsible for the technical review, analysis and coordinating the delivery of complex Datacenter electrical systems, associated controls, and overall topology
Review Electrical design infrastructure for Lease DC project buildouts, special projects, and retrofit upgrades, addressing any issues during construction
Assess existing facilities to ensure compliance with Microsoft standards
Collaborate with partners, lead design work groups, and conduct cross-functional meetings for multiple projects
Collaborate with the Global Electrical Team to understand and develop the data center (DC) electrical designs from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Construction (IFC) for new DC project build-outs
Lead & guide and oversee consultants in designing and coordinating electrical systems with other disciplines, as well as managing associated power requirements and overall electrical topology for our data center projects
Lead electrical workgroups with representatives from consulting firms and key stakeholders within Microsoft
Oversee all power system designs throughout the design phases, equipment procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery, and on-site installation
Address and resolve issues raised by construction teams and stakeholders
Collaborate extensively with the procurement team, manufacturers, as well as global and local engineering teams to provide the necessary electrical solutions for each project
Accountable for developing specifications and drawings, detailing the sequence of operations for electrical systems, as well as creating comprehensive drawings and specifications for our electrical topology
Assist the Operations team in troubleshooting electrical failures and collaborate with operations personnel and equipment vendors to resolve issues
Work on retrofits and upgrades of existing facilities
Partner directly with cross organizational teams such as engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors and suppliers
Be highly organized and able to oversee concurrent projects and focus under pressure
Structured thinking and logic with very proficient analytical skills
Proficient customer service focus, with the ability to communicate with highly technical management teams
Creative approach to problem solving and ability to think out of the box
Remote site support for construction teams
Provide guidance to staff augmentation teams (which includes A/Es and A/E Consultants)
Requirements:
Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements
Ability to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter
Nice to have:
Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience
Registered Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering
Minimum 3 years’ experience as a lead engineer with design, construction, operation or maintenance of large scale and complex electrical engineering systems (Data Centers, Micro Electronics are two examples of relevant industries)
Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and maintain high quality standards
Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, and automatic/static transfer switches
Detailed understanding of relays, protection schemes, high-voltage distribution system, power and distribution transformers, earthing and switching
Advanced knowledge of building codes and regulations
Experience in designing, operating, and commissioning electrical distribution systems, from high voltage (HV) to branch circuits
Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large data center environments
Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions
Experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages
Familiarity with ground-up construction, greenfield and brownfield site development requirements
Action-oriented with a passion for getting things done quickly, efficiently, and effectively
Ability to balance varying responsibilities that span rhythm of business, communications, executive management, and culture
Experience with using Bluebeam Revu and associated products
Subject area knowledge with AutoCAD, and 3D BIM programs such as AutoCAD or Revit
