The Sr. Director, Venture Investments will lead the investment process in innovative companies to provide potential optionality for future platforms for LivaNova. This leader will partner with the business to identify high-priority areas to focus on for external innovation, identify attractive early-stage companies, build the business case for investment, and manage the equity investments into those companies, balancing the interests of all parties including LivaNova.

Job Responsibility:

  • Partner with the business, strategy and corporate development team members to refine overall venture strategy and define areas of focus for venture investments
  • Build relationships with the broad external innovation ecosystem including venture capital firms, incubators, accelerators, entrepreneurs and universities across North America and Europe
  • Identify and source attractive early-stage technologies & companies in areas of strategic interest to LivaNova
  • Lead the diligence process and development of the business case, including seeking approvals through LivaNova’s governance process
  • Determine the right creative deal structures to meet the needs of the various stakeholders – founders, investors, and LivaNova
  • Lead negotiations of term sheet and definitive agreements through to closing
  • Manage portfolio companies to keep a track of progress against key milestones
  • may include board observer / board seat positions as appropriate

Requirements:

  • Prior experience in healthcare investing in a venture capital firm or a corporate venture fund is required
  • Solid financial acumen to support financial analysis, valuation, and deal structuring is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders is required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly is required
  • Evidence of analytical and critical thinking when performing due diligence is required
  • B.S. degree in a business or science related field required
  • Ability to travel ~30%

Nice to have:

  • Direct clinical experience is preferred
  • Track record of success in building business cases, closing investments and managing investments to exit is preferred
  • Well networked with prior exposure to the healthcare innovation ecosystem (venture capital firms, accelerators, incubators, universities) is preferred
  • One or more advanced scientific degrees, such as an MD or a scientific PhD is preferred

  • Support the Ventures Director in the effective oversight and governance of existing Ventures, including establishing and operating a calendar of activities and following up operationally to drive forward agreed actions
  • Identify, develop and diligence new potential venture/partnership/investment opportunities

  • Establish and operate a framework and governance for working with our Ventures that enables successful steering and oversight
