Due to GEICO’s continued growth and transformation, we have an exciting senior-level opportunity to join our Legal organization within the Litigation function. As Senior Director, Associate General Counsel – Litigation, you will report directly to the Head of Litigation and serve as a trusted legal and strategic advisor to the business. This role is designed for a hands-on senior leader who can hit the ground running—someone who is equally effective operating at the executive level while leading and empowering teams below them. You will be responsible for translating enterprise and executive leadership priorities into clear, actionable objectives across the litigation organization and ensuring consistent execution. In this highly visible role, you will provide senior-level legal counsel across litigation matters related to both our Auto and Commercial claims while leading and developing a team of attorneys. You will partner closely with Claims executives to manage legal, financial, and reputational risk, drive operational excellence, and support transformation initiatives. This role has regular interaction with GEICO’s senior leadership team and plays a critical role in navigating complex legal challenges while enabling business growth.

Job Responsibility:

  • Serve as a senior legal leader for GEICO’s Claims litigation portfolio
  • Manage the team handling all phases of litigation (discovery, motions, trial, appeal) and investigations
  • manage outside counsel, budgets, and fee negotiations
  • Partner with Claims leadership to help design, build, and scale a litigation support model aligned to the expansion of GEICO’s commercial claims business
  • Partner with Claims and Product leadership to help design, implement, and refine claims processes and procedures that support the launch and scaling of new commercial insurance product lines
  • Oversee and drive continuous improvement of litigation operations, including legal intake processes, workflows, metrics, and reporting
  • Translate company strategy and executive leadership goals into practical, executable legal priorities
  • Develop cost-effective strategies for claims related litigation, identify risks, and implement procedures for legal service delivery
  • Lead and support enterprise transformation initiatives
  • Provide counsel to business partners on escalated disputes, integrate legal considerations into business decisions, and advise on risk
  • Provide proactive legal advice on complex litigation risk, discovery strategy, and evolving legal issues
  • Advise senior leadership and participate in strategic initiatives
  • Partner with business leaders and operations, to deliver practical, risk-based legal solutions
  • Lead, develop, and mentor a team of attorneys
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with outside counsel and key external partners
  • Maintain awareness of external legal, regulatory, and litigation trends and advise internal stakeholders
  • Address regulatory enforcement actions, analyze laws, and manage compliance risks
  • Represent the Legal department in internal governance forums and, as appropriate, in external legal or regulatory engagements

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • Current or recent experience operating at the Senior Director level or above (or equivalent), with demonstrated accountability for enterprise-level outcomes and leadership of managers
  • 12+ years of legal experience, including significant experience in insurance-related litigation, claims, or complex commercial litigation
  • Legal experience working for a Property & Casualty insurance company preferred
  • Demonstrated experience managing attorneys who handle litigation, with the ability to operate through layers while staying close to the work
  • Strong understanding of litigation risk, insurance coverage issues, and the regulatory and legal environment impacting the insurance industry
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, actionable guidance for business partners
  • Proven ability to balance legal risk with business priorities in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment
