Robert Half is seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator for a company in the Madison area. This role will manage and support enterprise database environments with a primary focus on Microsoft SQL Server. This role is responsible for ensuring database availability, performance, security, and reliability for critical business applications. The position requires a high level of independence, strong troubleshooting ability, and collaboration with development and infrastructure teams.
Job Responsibility:
Administer, monitor, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments to ensure performance, reliability, and availability
Perform routine database maintenance including backups, restores, patching, upgrades, and health checks
Diagnose and resolve database performance issues, availability problems, and data integrity concerns
Design and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity solutions, including regular testing
Implement and maintain database security and access controls
Partner with application developers and infrastructure teams to support database-dependent systems
Support database platform upgrades, modernization efforts, and lifecycle management
Contribute to operational reporting related to backups, availability, and system health
Participate in on-call support for production database systems
Document database standards, procedures, and configurations
Provide secondary support for Oracle database environments
Requirements:
Advanced administration and performance tuning for Microsoft SQL Server
Strong troubleshooting skills in complex database environments
Experience with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning
Knowledge of database security and auditing practices
Experience with automation and scripting (such as PowerShell, T-SQL, PL/SQL, or similar tools)
Familiarity with database monitoring and alerting tools
Working knowledge of Oracle database administration is preferred
7+ years of experience administering enterprise-level database environments
Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server in production environments
Experience supporting high-availability, business-critical systems
Experience implementing automation or process improvements within database operations
Nice to have:
