Job Description

We’re looking for a Senior Credit Analyst to join the Merchant Lending Credit team and help Shopify responsibly expand access to capital for merchants. Shopify Capital gives merchants access to funding they can use to run and grow their businesses. As we scale across products like loans, lines of credit, and card-based products, the Merchant Lending Credit team helps make sure our credit decisions are sound, merchant-centered, compliant, and aligned with Shopify’s long-term risk appetite. This role is for someone who brings strong underwriting judgment and wants to help shape how Shopify Capital grows. You’ll evaluate complex merchant credit opportunities, synthesize financial, operational, behavioral, and model-driven signals, and make clear recommendations on lending decisions. You’ll also build deep expertise in Shopify Capital and use that expertise to improve how we assess risk, make decisions, and scale our lending products. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who can operate with autonomy, navigate ambiguity, and earn trust across Finance, Data Science, Product, Engineering, Legal, Compliance, Recovery, and Support. You’ll make high-quality credit decisions today while helping build the product and systems that help Capital scale.

Job Responsibility

  • Evaluate complex merchant credit opportunities across Shopify Capital products, including loans, lines of credit, and card-based products
  • Review financial statements, bank statements, tax returns, and Shopify performance data to assess creditworthiness and repayment capacity of merchants
  • Prepare clear, well-supported application recommendations that outline key risks, mitigants, and decision rationale
  • Handle sensitive financial and business information with discretion, integrity, and care
  • Represent the credit perspective across the organization, helping teams understand risk tradeoffs and make better product, policy, and operational decisions
  • Partner with Product, Data Science, Engineering, Compliance, Legal, and other teams to help shape the future of Shopify Capital with a practical, merchant-centered risk lens
  • Identify opportunities to improve underwriting workflows, tools, decision frameworks, and quality controls, with a focus on building scalable systems

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years of experience in credit analysis, underwriting, commercial lending, fintech lending, banking, or a related field
  • Experience evaluating small business or commercial cash advances, loans, lines of credit, or card-based products
  • Strong credit judgment and ownership, with the ability to make concise, defensible recommendations by synthesizing both quantitative signals and qualitative context
  • Ability to represent a credit perspective clearly and constructively with cross-functional partners
  • Demonstrated ability to drive ambiguous, cross-functional credit or operational initiatives from problem definition through implementation
  • Experience influencing cross-functional partners and building strong working relationships across Product, Engineering, Data Science, Compliance, or similar teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain decisions, risk tradeoffs, and recommendations to cross-functional and senior stakeholders
  • Comfort working in fast-moving environments where products, processes, and priorities can change quickly
  • Curiosity and a continuous improvement mindset, with a bias toward leaving systems and processes better than they found them
  • Comfort using data and analytical tools (e.g., SQL) to investigate credit performance, portfolio trends, or risk signals
  • Experience translating analytical findings into improvements to credit standards, policies, or operational processes

Nice to have

  • Experience in fintech lending, particularly SMB or merchant financing
  • Experience using AI tools to work faster, learn quickly, and improve the quality of analysis, documentation, and workflows
