We have an outstanding opportunity for an experienced, multi-faceted attorney to join Uber's Autonomous Mobility & Delivery legal team as we develop the world's best platform for autonomous vehicles to go to market. If you're passionate about solving novel problems, driving regulatory development to unleash innovation, and transforming the way that people go anywhere and get (almost) anything, come and join this bold team as we scale Uber's AV offerings. This Senior Counsel will own a wide range of regulatory counseling initiatives that govern AV deployments across mobility and delivery use cases in US and international markets. In this role, you'll help build regulatory structures around the world, while advising internal clients against the backdrop of those same evolving rules, and engaging directly with regulators in support of Uber's mission. This role will offer views on AV safety at the vehicle and ADS levels, fleet management, and privacy principles. You'll also provide counseling on related commercial operations, working closely with cross functional business teams to launch autonomous vehicles across the Uber platform and build Uber capacity to develop the best-in-class autonomous vehicle ecosystem.
Job Responsibility:
Serve as a front-line attorney to craft and support creative solutions to novel and complex legal problems
Provide guidance that reflects both acute legal and strategic analysis, as well as an appreciation of Uber's short- and long-term AV goals
Soak up the quickly developing regulatory frameworks surrounding AVs, sidewalk robots, drones, eVTOLs and fleets, across the globe, so as to help Uber successfully navigate these various considerations
Engage directly with regulators and policymakers worldwide to proactively position Uber for success, reactively respond to regulator interest or inquiries, and help shape the regulatory framework governing Uber's AV efforts
Collaborate closely with our Policy and Communications team as we advance creative regulatory approaches
Proactively identify and resolve issues impacting Uber's AV businesses, often through developing and advancing your own proposed solutions
Engage and negotiate with partners on how to navigate regulatory issues with relevance to commercial agreements
Develop structures to promote compliance with regulatory obligation, including through engaging with industry coalitions and policymakers
Requirements:
J.D. and license to practice law in at least one state
8+ years of legal experience in private practice, in-house and/or government OR Minimum 7 years, including +1 year Uber internal
Nice to have:
Familiarity with Uber or expertise in the logistics and platform businesses that make up our Go Anywhere-Get Anything portfolio, from Mobility to Delivery, and from Autonomous Vehicles to Sidewalk Robots
Experience with regulatory issues around autonomous vehicles, drones, or eVTOLs, as well as with conventional vehicle regulatory frameworks
Strong, team-oriented collaborator, with confidence and flexibility to perform in nimble, rapidly changing and growing environments, as well as build relationships and gain credibility with business and legal partners
Proven ability to manage complex projects and a track record of building new or improving existing programs or processes, preferably in a fast-paced environment
Experience providing business-focused, executable counseling that demonstrates leadership in assessing regulatory issues
Excellent drafting, written and verbal communication skills and ability to adapt legal requirements in balanced, creative and pragmatic ways to facilitate clear and open communication at all levels of the organization
Curiosity, along with the ability to spot issues, get to the heart of a matter, and articulate plans to address them
Ability to translate complex legal issues and ambiguity into clear and simple advice, to communicate effectively with non-legal internal colleagues, and to interface with a broad range of senior business managers, executives and other colleagues and professionals across our company
