Job Description

OpenAI's Legal team plays a crucial role in furthering OpenAI's mission by tackling innovative, fundamental legal issues in AI. We’re growing our world-class Litigation and Regulatory team and seek an experienced counsel to support regulatory matters and investigations, litigation, and dispute resolution related to our business. This role is highly cross-functional across OpenAI, including work across our Legal, Communications, Global Affairs, and Executive teams.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide legal advice and counsel on a wide range of regulatory matters, including informal inquiries, investigations and enforcement actions in the US and globally
  • Assist with related regulatory litigation and enforcement matters
  • Assist with civil litigation (copyright, trademark, IP, open source, privacy, class actions, competition, and other civil issues), especially where issues dovetail with regulatory scrutiny
  • Assist with discovery and requests for information from regulators and courts
  • Prepare employees to provide deposition and trial testimony and/or appearances before regulators
  • Manage dispute resolution for inbound demands, complaints, or regulatory actions
  • Oversee and choose outside counsel
  • Assist with proactive/affirmative engagement across litigation and regulatory issues
  • Assist with strategy on proactive engagement with regulators
  • Stay current on relevant laws, regulations, and industry trends, and provide updates and legal guidance to company leadership and stakeholders
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather relevant information, assess risk, and develop legal strategies to resolve disputes

Requirements

  • At least 10+ years of combined regulatory investigations and/or litigation experience at innovative technology companies and law firms
  • Strong sense of ownership, inquisitive and enthusiastic about technology, enjoy being continually challenged, and can demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous situations
  • JD and license or qualification to practice in CA
