Lawes is working alongside a leading insurer who is seeking a skilled Construction Underwriter to support the continued growth of its mid-market construction portfolio. This role involves underwriting within the construction sector, contributing to a developing portfolio. The successful candidate will play a central role in expanding and managing a diverse book of business.

Job Responsibility:

  • Underwrite CAR and Liability risks across the mid-market segment
  • Develop and maintain relationships with a wide broker panel, from national to independent firms
  • Identify and convert new business opportunities in line with growth targets
  • Support retention and development of existing accounts through strong client engagement
  • Conduct broker and client meetings to understand risk and offer tailored underwriting solutions
  • Ensure all underwriting activity aligns with internal standards and regulatory expectations
  • Review and assess risks for accounts typically ranging from £10,000 to £250,000 GWP
  • Prepare detailed underwriting proposals for both new and renewal business
  • Maintain frequent broker contact to explore pipeline opportunities and offer support
  • Attend external meetings to strengthen relationships and better understand client needs
  • Monitor the performance of the portfolio, adjusting approach where necessary
  • Share insights and collaborate with team members to support collective goals

Requirements:

  • 2-3+ years of experience in a Construction Underwriting role
  • Strong background in underwriting both CAR and Construction Liability
  • Experience with mid-market business and familiarity with relevant premium levels
  • Proven success working with both national and regional brokers
  • Solid technical underwriting and risk assessment capabilities
  • Commercially minded with a proactive approach to business development
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a broker-focused mindset
  • Analytical thinker with sound judgment and decision-making ability
  • Comfortable working independently and within a collaborative team structure
  • Target-driven with a commitment to high performance and quality
