Job Description:

McCarter & English is seeking a Senior Conflicts Attorney. The position may be remote, or hybrid from any of our office locations. The Senior Conflicts Attorney is a valued member of the Firm’s New Business Intake team and provides support to the Firm’s offices nationally as directed by the General Counsel. The Senior Conflicts Attorney is primarily responsible for reviewing conflict check reports produced by the Firm’s Conflicts and New Business Analysts in connection with the business intake and new hire processes, identifying legal and possible business conflicts, and managing the resolution of any such conflicts. The Senior Conflicts Attorney will work directly with partners and the Firm’s General Counsel daily, as well as other members of Firm leadership.

Job Responsibility:

  • Review conflict reports prepared in connection with the business intake process. Identify potential legal and business conflicts of interest issues, and provide detailed analysis and advice directly to partners, and collaborate with members of the firm to resolve conflict issues
  • Assist in drafting and approving engagement letters and editing letters drafted by others
  • Draft conflict waivers and facilitate waiver requests
  • Review conflict reports prepared in connection with the new hire process
  • provide detailed analysis and advice directly to the HR Department, Strategic Growth Committee, and firm leadership as well as advising new hires on conflict issues
  • Oversee implementation and maintenance of ethical walls and other legal screens
  • Provide guidance to team of Conflict Analysts and New Business Analysts in support of the business intake process, including best practices on corporate family research, and other aspects of the preparation of conflict reports
  • Answer queries from attorneys and professional staff across the firm, concerning business intake policies and procedures, conflicts of interest, related ethical considerations, and other firm policies
  • Work on ad hoc projects of the Office of General Counsel that arise from time to time
  • Must have ability and willingness to work outside of normal business hours as needed.

Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of conflict reports produced from Intapp Open as well as basic knowledge of legal software such as D&B/Hoovers, other Intapp products (e.g., Walls)
  • CapIQ, WorldCheck
  • JD and active bar license required in the state where Senior Conflict Attorney will work
  • 5+ years experience working in conflicts department in a mid- to large-sized law firm
  • Knowledge and understanding of professional responsibility and legal ethics rules
  • Database searching experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word)
  • Close attention to detail, fast thinker and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate communication over multiple medias (e.g., in -person, phone, Microsoft Teams, etc.) to a broad range of personality types
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential client information with the appropriate discretion/sensitivity
  • Experience in directly interfacing with clients is preferred
  • Requires ability to oversee and supervise staff members, as needed by the Department.
