Job Description:

We are currently seeking a highly skilled Senior Communication Advisor to join a state government department to support a major infrastructure-related program responding to natural disaster impacts. This role will be responsible for delivering professional, effective, and timely communication support that contributes to the program's success and public accountability.

Job Responsibility:

  • Develop a strong understanding of departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure all communication materials meet governance and compliance requirements
  • Draft, review, and edit a variety of communication materials, ensuring clarity, consistency, and suitability for diverse audiences
  • Coordinate internal and external approval processes for communication deliverables including media statements, briefing notes, engagement plans, newsletters, social media posts, traffic alerts, and public correspondence
  • Manage competing priorities and respond promptly to urgent communication requests, triaging appropriately and maintaining high service standards
  • Provide strategic communication advice to program and district staff on media engagement, issues management, and public messaging
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of internal content on the program’s SharePoint site and other digital channels
  • Support the Program Manager (Reporting and Communication) with various reporting and administrative tasks as required
  • Maintain internal support systems including tracking databases and spreadsheets
  • Build and sustain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners to support communication outcomes

Requirements:

  • Proven experience in a communication, media or public affairs role, preferably within a government or infrastructure-related environment
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging for various audiences and platforms
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities
  • Experience in preparing and managing communication and engagement materials across traditional and digital media
  • Sound knowledge of government communication protocols and processes (desirable)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and SharePoint
  • experience with content management systems and social media tools is advantageous

Nice to have:

A background in infrastructure, transport, emergency response or similar sectors will be highly regarded
