Sheffield Children's is seeking an experienced coder to join our small, friendly clinical coding team on a fixed-term basis to cover maternity leave until May 2027. Our Clinical Coding Department prides itself on delivering a high-quality, accurate, and timely coding service. Job Responsibility
Produce accurate, complete and timely clinical coding for inpatient and day-case activity in line with national standards (OPCS-4, ICD-10)
Analyse and interpret complex clinical documentation to assign the correct diagnostic and procedural codes
Liaise with clinical teams to clarify information and ensure accurate representation of patient care
Maintain high coding quality by following Trust policies, national coding standards, and Clinical Classifications Service guidance
Participate in regular coder meetings, training sessions and audits to support continuous improvement
Support and mentorship to junior coders
Requirements
Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC)
Clinical Coding Refresher status is current
Degree level education or equivalent level of experience
Substantial experience of clinical coding in an acute NHS trust setting
Experience and knowledge of coding a wide range of specialties and all levels of complexity
Experience in paediatric coding
Experience of applying complex coding rules and conventions in order to reach appropriate coding decisions
Working under time bound and conflicting deadlines
Excellent knowledge of coding theory
High level of understanding of medical terminology and physiology and anatomy
Ability to make judgements in complex coding cases
A good understanding of PbR and HRGs
Ability to read sensitive and destressing information
Able to work as an individual and part of a team
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent PC skills including a working knowledge and current experience of Microsoft Word, Excel and use of email
