We are looking for an experienced Senior Accountant to join our team in New York, NY. This contract-to-permanent position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the financial operations of a leading university. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in accounting principles and practices, along with a proactive approach to improving processes and ensuring compliance.
Job Responsibility:
Oversee the daily operations of the general accounting department, ensuring accuracy in the general ledger and financial reporting
Manage the month-end close process, verifying timely and accurate posting of transactions in accordance with established accounting standards
Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations, including areas such as payroll liabilities, deferred revenue, and receivables
Prepare monthly reconciliations and perform key accounting functions, including monitoring international and domestic bank transactions and calculating quarterly sales tax filings
Coordinate audit processes, including preparation of schedules and compliance reporting for financial statement audits, Single Audits, and 403(b) audits
Account for investments and endowment funds, reconciling transactions between the general ledger and endowment management systems
Analyze and reconcile plant assets, including depreciation calculations and projections
Collaborate with payroll and benefits teams to ensure accurate reconciliation and timely remittance of retirement funds and union dues
Identify opportunities for process improvements and act as a liaison to support stakeholders with accounting-related needs
Perform additional accounting duties as assigned
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
Minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in higher education
Proficiency in managing month-end close processes and general ledger operations
Strong skills in preparing journal entries and performing account reconciliations
Familiarity with investment and endowment accounting
Experience supporting audits and preparing compliance reports
Solid understanding of payroll, benefits, and tax reconciliation processes
Demonstrated ability to identify process improvement opportunities and collaborate effectively with stakeholder
