The Senior Accountant will provide hands-on accounting and financial reporting support for a public-sector educational organization during a period of transition, increased workload, or system/process improvement. This role plays a critical part in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with government accounting standards, and supporting audits, budget cycles, and grant reporting.
Job Responsibility:
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements in accordance with GASB standards
Perform complex general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis
Support fund accounting (general fund, special revenue, capital projects, and grant funds)
Assist with budget development, monitoring, and forecasting in collaboration with finance leadership
Manage or support grant-related accounting, including allowable cost tracking and compliance reporting
Coordinate with external auditors and respond to audit requests and inquiries
Review internal controls and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance
Partner with payroll, accounts payable, and procurement teams to ensure accurate financial recording
Provide documentation, training, and knowledge transfer to internal staff as needed
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within governmental or educational environments
Strong working knowledge of GASB, public fund accounting, and financial reporting requirements
Experience supporting audits and regulatory reporting
Advanced proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, lookups, reconciliations)
Experience with public-sector ERP or financial systems (e.g., Oracle, Workday, Tyler, PeopleSoft, Munis, Lawson, or similar)
Nice to have:
Prior experience within K–12, higher education, or public education agencies
CPA or active CPA candidate (preferred, not required)
Experience assisting during fiscal year close, audit prep, or post‑audit remediation
Ability to step into an existing environment quickly and work independently with minimal onboarding
