We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in the St Austell area on an ongoing basis. This role involves supporting pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and complex needs, including medical needs, wheelchair use, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome. The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff and therapists to provide high-quality, personalised support, ensuring pupils are safe, comfortable, and able to access learning in a nurturing environment.
Job Responsibility:
Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with PMLD
Support pupils with complex medical and physical needs, including wheelchair users
Assist with personal care, moving and handling, and feeding where required
Support communication using alternative and augmentative methods (e.g. PECS, Makaton)
Help deliver tailored learning activities in line with EHCPs
Promote independence, dignity, and inclusion at all times
Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and healthcare professionals
Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment
Requirements:
Previous experience working in an SEN or PMLD setting
Confidence supporting pupils with complex needs and medical conditions
Willingness to assist with personal care and moving and handling
Patient, empathetic, and resilient approach
Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Nice to have:
Experience with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and wheelchair users
Training in moving and handling, PEG feeding, or medical care
Knowledge of communication strategies such as Makaton or PECS
