An impactful opportunity has arisen for an SEN Teaching Assistant to join a dedicated specialist team in Bury St Edmunds. This isn't just a job in a classroom; it is an opportunity to be an advocate and mentor for students with complex learning needs, including Autism (ASC), ADHD, and moderate to severe learning difficulties. You will be the "anchor" in a student's day, helping them navigate a tailored curriculum designed to build their confidence and life skills.
Job Responsibility:
1:1 Mentorship: You will provide dedicated support to students, helping them manage their emotions and stay engaged with their personalised learning tasks
Independence Coaching: You will guide learners through daily routines, teaching them the vital social and life skills they need to navigate the world independently
Curriculum Adaptation: Working alongside specialist teachers, you will help "translate" lessons into sensory-friendly or simplified formats that match the student's unique learning style
EHCP Advocacy: You will play a key role in tracking and achieving the specific goals laid out in each student's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
Safe Haven Creation: You will help maintain a calm, low-arousal environment, using positive behaviour strategies to ensure every student feels safe to take risks and learn
Requirements:
Experience: A background in supporting individuals with additional needs, whether in a school, care, or community setting
Resilience: The ability to remain calm and supportive during challenging behavioural moments, always maintaining a positive outlook
Communication: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to use (or a willingness to learn) alternative communication methods like PECS or Makaton
Team Spirit: A collaborative approach, working hand-in-hand with teachers, therapists, and parents to provide holistic care
Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or the willingness to apply for one)
