Job Description

We are seeking dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistants to support pupils in educational settings across Haywards Heath. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people who require additional emotional, behavioural, and learning support. Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff, you will help create a positive, safe, and engaging learning environment that enables students to achieve their full potential both academically and personally.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs
  • Assist in implementing individual learning and behaviour support plans
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with students
  • Support students in developing emotional regulation, resilience, and social skills
  • Promote positive behaviour and de-escalate challenging situations effectively
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals
  • Monitor and record student progress and wellbeing

  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build positive relationships and establish appropriate boundaries
  • Resilience and confidence in managing challenging behaviour
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people
  • Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent
  • Experience within schools, alternative provisions, youth work, care settings, or residential support
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and behaviour management strategies
