This is a great opportunity to be a Security Equipment Engineer with us! The role is permanent, 37 hours per week (generally Monday - Friday 0700-1500 may be required at weekends), and based at the Civic Offices in Portsmouth but you will be required to work at all of our CCTV locations. As a Security Equipment Engineer within Portsmouth City Council's Community Safety team, you will play a key role in delivering and maintaining a secure, resilient, and legally compliant surveillance infrastructure across the city. Reporting directly to the CCTV Manager, you will be responsible for the installation, repair, servicing, and maintenance of CCTV and alarm systems (both analogue and digital), as well as associated video management software. This role is essential in ensuring that all systems meet current statutory and regulatory requirements, including the UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, Surveillance Camera Code of Practice, Health and Safety at Work Act, Roads and Street Works Act, and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. You will also be expected to conduct and support Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and ensure all surveillance activities are proportionate, transparent, and justified.
Job Responsibility:
Delivering and maintaining a secure, resilient, and legally compliant surveillance infrastructure across the city
Installation, repair, servicing, and maintenance of CCTV and alarm systems (both analogue and digital) and associated video management software
Conducting and supporting Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
Ensuring all surveillance activities are proportionate, transparent, and justified
Requirements:
BTEC standard qualification, NVQ or equivalent or some form of formal training within the CCTV Engineer/maintenance industry is desirable
Fire and intruder are desirable, but training can be given
Experience in CCTV & alarm system maintenance and knowledge of statutory regulations & codes of practice
IPAF licence would be desirable, although training would be given
Qualification in NRSWA Unit 2 signing lighting and guarding would be desirable
Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with a customer focused approach
Problem solver who can use initiative with an intuitive approach combined with common sense
Ability to prioritise, respond to pressure and meet deadlines
Ability to work in adverse working conditions and in hot and cold weather
Good level of physical fitness
Head for heights
Ability to work alone but also as part of a wider team
Flexible and able to work outside of normal core hours
Full UK driving licence (with cat C1 desirable)
Nice to have:
IPAF licence
NRSWA Unit 2 signing lighting and guarding qualification
