The Department of Pathology at UC San Diego aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized for their expertise. The Department’s research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UC San Diego. Under supervision, incumbent will assist lab personnel in routine tasks to keep the research lab in smooth working order.
Job Responsibility:
Assist lab personnel in routine tasks to keep the research lab in smooth working order.
Prepare standardized media reagents, and solutions for research.
Clean and sterilize dishware.
Prepare samples and assist in assays for molecular biology and protein biochemistry.
Assist with preparation of cell culture.
Assist with animal model experiments.
Assist with making routine analyses as needed and record results in a notebook.
Order and stock equipment and supplies as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences
or an equivalent combination of education and experience
and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and equipment: including preparation of buffers and stock solutions, pH meters, balances, centrifuges, autoclaves, fume and laminor hoods, microscopes.
Ability to keep organized and accurate records and notebooks.
Knowledge of proper lab maintenance and cleaning procedures, including proper way to clean, store and maintaqin glassware.
Knowledge of sterile technique.
Knowledge of cell culture.
Knowledge of laboratory safety policies and procedures.
Familiarity with biohazards and chemical hazards.
Experience and skill in using computers (PC and Mac) and with programs such as Word, Excel, Photoshop, PowerPoint.
Experience working with lab animals.
Clear and effective written and oral communication skills necessary to interact with others in a research/academic environment for presentation of data and results to others.
Previous work experience in an academic research laboratory setting.

Nice to have:
Preferable College level course work in a life science and/or some life science laboratory experience (approx. 2 yrs).
Familiar with Affinity Column Chromatography, Agarose Gel electrophoresis, Differential Centrifugation Sample Preparation/Extraction, Precipitation Fractionation (salt), Western Blot, Bacterial Transformation and Plating, Bradford/BCA/A280 Assays, Calibration and use Spectrophotometer, SDS and Native PAGE and transfer.
