Technicians are vital to the work of the school and they are seen very much as part of our whole team. The successful applicant needs to have a real interest in the subject, and be flexible and well-organised. It is important that they can use their initiative and work on their own when necessary.
Job Responsibility:
To keep up to date with curriculum developments preparing in advance of lessons all necessary equipment, resources and documents
delivering them to the relevant classroom and laying out as requested
clearing and washing up at the end of lessons
returning all equipment to the prep room or storage area as appropriate
Liaise with procurement for the ordering of perishable resources
Apply generic lab technician skills to deliver high-quality practicals and demonstrations to be used in physics/chemistry/biology lessons
If requisitioned by teachers, follow the control procedures for the use of radioactive sources to safely transport the sources and associated equipment from the ‘Radiation Cupboard’ to the classroom and then return them after use
Monitor stock of materials and equipment. Maintain the stock levels spreadsheet and use this to inform planning for orders and budgeting
Keep prep rooms clean and tidy, ensuring a safe environment for all staff
Help in the trial of core practicals
When requested, assist teachers with demonstrations and practicals in the classroom
Develop new systems in the laboratories and prep rooms to improve the technical support service
Help conduct half-termly lab checks and report problems regarding labs, fume hoods and equipment. Help ensure the laboratories (including sinks) are regularly cleaned and that the gas taps and electric sockets are regularly checked for foreign objects inserted into them
Requirements:
Level 2 (i.e. GCSE, specifying particular subjects), or level 3 (A level) or equivalent
Excellent English oral and written communication skills
Previous successful experience of working in a laboratory is preferable
Experience of Microsoft and Google for Education tools
Other relevant qualifications up to and including degree level
Ability to manage multiple tasks at a time, without supervision
Proactive in planning and completing daily and weekly workload
Ability to build relations with students, teachers and other departments in the school
Strong organisational skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
