The School Counsellor is responsible for providing therapeutic counselling services to support students experiencing social/emotional difficulties that impact their ability to learn and overall wellness. These services are provided through individual therapeutic counselling and intervention counselling. The School Counsellor liaises between the school, the family, and the community to provide the most effective services for the students. As an employee in the organization, you will model the intent of the Maskwacis Declaration on Education and the core values of Wahkotowin, Iyiniw Mamotohnehickikan, Nehiyaw Pimatisiwin, and Nehiyawewin.
Job Responsibility:
Provides therapeutic counselling services to students
Maintains high knowledge of best practices in student wellness
Enhances profile of School Counselling Program
Ensures counselling Code of Ethics guides services
Develops yearly counselling plan
Provides individual and targeted therapeutic counselling
Provides informal assessment and intervention
Develops workshops and training
Supports administration and school staff through trauma-informed lens
Supports students and parents in identifying professional services
Builds relationships with community elders and cultural advisors
Fosters partnerships with community supports
Demonstrates problem-solving and coping skills
Consults with Coordinator of Counselling
Prioritzes schedule to meet needs
Works flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
Ensures registrations and certifications are valid
Provides crisis intervention support
Assesses crises and develops plans
Participates in ARTO process
Assesses risk for suicidal behaviour
Models calmness in crisis
Acts as advocate for students and families
Knowledgeable of community agencies
Assists in referral and advocacy process
Models continuous learning
Provides timely data as requested
Requirements:
Diploma or Bachelor's degree in a related human services field
A Master's degree in Counselling or a related field is an asset
5+ years of experience in providing counselling services, preferably within a school environment
Extensive experience in working with children, adolescents, families and social service agencies
Knowledge of emotional/behavioural disorders, complex needs within education, family violence, poverty, suicide prevention, addictions, bereavement and adolescent relationships
Clean criminal record check, including vulnerable sector clearance
Knowledge of the Cree culture and the traditions of the local First Nations communities
Good numeracy and literacy skills
Ability to work successfully with students with challenging behaviour
Ability to relate well to children and adults
Exemplary interpersonal skills
Understanding of relevant policies, codes of practice, and awareness of relevant legislation
Proven ability to organize, evaluate, communicate and present information
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
