Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and reflective Wellbeing Coach to join our school community. This role plays a vital part in supporting students who experience emotional, social, behavioural, physical, or mental health challenges that may impact their learning, engagement, and overall wellbeing. The Wellbeing Coach works directly with students on a one-to-one basis and in small groups, building trusting relationships and using targeted, evidence-informed strategies to help students overcome barriers, develop resilience, and thrive both in school and beyond. Working as part of the Pastoral / Inclusion Team, the Wellbeing Coach reports to the Head of SEN & Inclusion (or equivalent lead) and contributes to a whole-school culture that promotes emotional health, inclusion, equality, and positive wellbeing.

Job Responsibility

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students, enabling them to develop resilience, confidence, and a positive sense of self
  • Work with students individually and in small groups to support emotional, social, behavioural, physical, and mental wellbeing
  • Deliver targeted wellbeing interventions and programmes (e.g. nurture groups, social skills development, self-regulation, emotional literacy, resilience building)
  • Use structured coaching frameworks and models across a series of sessions to identify what is important to the pupil, set personal goals and achievable steps, build skills, confidence, and motivation, use problem-solving strategies to overcome challenges
  • Work from a strength-based approach, focusing on students’ assets, abilities, and untapped potential
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, school leaders, SEN staff, pastoral teams, families, and external professionals to ensure coordinated and holistic support
  • Support shared decision-making with relevant professionals and active engagement with personalised health, care, and support plans
  • Work in partnership with local agencies and services to raise awareness of health and wellbeing coaching and make appropriate referrals, including social prescribing where relevant
  • Identify when a pupil’s needs are beyond the scope of the role and refer appropriately to other health, education, or safeguarding professionals
  • Play an active role in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students in line with school policies and procedures
  • Provide non-judgemental, non-discriminatory support, respecting diversity, cultural background, and lifestyle choices
  • Actively promote equality, inclusion, and accessibility, encouraging engagement from students and families who may be less likely to access support
  • Manage and prioritise a caseload according to pupil need, level of risk, and required support
  • Gather information sensitively from students, families, and carers to monitor progress and evaluate the impact of wellbeing and health coaching interventions
  • Track outcomes and report on the effectiveness of interventions, sharing insights with school staff, families, and referral agencies
  • Encourage students and families to provide feedback and share their experiences of the impact of wellbeing support
  • Provide referral organisations with regular updates, outcomes, and feedback regarding students they have referred
  • Seek ongoing feedback to improve service quality and demonstrate impact
  • Work flexibly, adapting to the needs of the school and students while maintaining the integrity and boundaries of the role
  • Give students time and space to tell their stories, consistently focusing on what matters to them
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, reflection, resilience, and a commitment to continuous professional development

Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally within education, pastoral care, youth support, mentoring, counselling, coaching, or a related setting

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with students, families, and professionals with warmth, empathy, and sensitivity
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Skilled in adapting approaches and interventions to meet individual needs
