Job Description:

School Caretakers are the backbone of a safe and efficient school environment. Your core responsibilities will focus on premises management, health & safety, and security.

Job Responsibility:

  • Security & Access: Opening and securing the school site, responding to alarm call-outs, and managing key-holder responsibilities
  • Routine Maintenance: Undertaking minor repairs (plumbing, joinery, painting, fixture repair) to ensure the building is in excellent working order
  • Grounds Maintenance: Maintaining external areas, including litter picking, ensuring clear pathways, and basic grounds work
  • Health & Safety (H&S): Conducting regular checks (e.g., fire safety, water temperature, Legionella checks) and ensuring compliance with H&S regulations
  • Contractor Liaison: Overseeing and monitoring external contractors (e.g., maintenance, cleaners) while on-site
  • Porterage & Setup: Setting up and dismantling furniture and equipment for assemblies, exams, and school events

Requirements:

  • Practical Skills: Demonstrable DIY, maintenance, or trade skills (basic plumbing, carpentry, painting)
  • Safety Knowledge: Understanding of basic Health & Safety procedures relevant to school premises
  • Reliability: Proven record of punctuality and dependability, including flexibility for split shifts (e.g., 6am opens, 6pm closes) and occasional out-of-hours call-outs
  • DBS: A clear and current Enhanced DBS (or immediate willingness to apply)

Nice to have:

Previous experience as a School Caretaker or Site Assistant is a strong advantage
