The Sales and Use Tax Manager oversees the Company's North America indirect tax compliance, including filing, reporting, and audit management across multiple jurisdictions. The Tax Manager ensures accuracy in tax calculations, research tax law changes, and implements process improvements. This role involves managing audit defense, providing strategic tax advice, and mentoring staff. The position will also include general ledger support, treasury support and coordination with outside consultants.
Job Responsibility:
Manage the multi-state sales and use and other indirect tax return process including filing of tax returns via 3rd party reporting systems, issuance of payments, registrations and responding to tax notices
Coordinate and review the data collection and return processing of property taxes via third-party reporting system, including the issuance of payments, tracking of movement of personal property, and coordination with assessors
Maintain exemption certificates and documentation for tax positions. Communicate with clients and internal operations teams the acceptance of the certificates
Collaborate with internal teams to address tax-related issues and provide guidance on tax compliance matters
Participate in sales and use tax and property tax audits, gather documentation, and negotiate with tax authorities
Stay current with evolving state and local tax laws (SALT), conducting research to determine taxability and nexus
Provide advice on tax planning opportunities to minimize tax liability and support business initiatives
Assess tax implications surrounding pending mergers and acquisitions and participate in integration activities
Reconcile and report quarterly sales and use and property tax accounts and review monthly tax journals
Requirements:
Must possess one of the following: Bachelor’s degree in business, Accounting, or Economics
Associate’s degree in business, Accounting, or Economics with five (5) years in a corporate environment or accounting services, preparing tax returns and reports
High School Diploma or equivalent with seven (7) years in a corporate environment or accounting services, preparing tax returns and reports
Minimum of three (3) years of experience with sales and use tax and property tax compliance in multiple states
In-depth knowledge of state and local sales and tax regulations and property tax processes
Proficiency with tax software systems, with preference given to candidates familiar with Avalara and Vertex
Solid understanding of accounts payable, treasury payment systems and basic accounting and tax processes
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public
Strong communication with multiple groups, including government officials, vendors, and outside consultants
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Advanced Excel (Pivot Tables, Power Query, macros), and Explorer Internet software
Self-starter who can organize, prioritize, and manage urgent and competing deadlines in a fast-paced and demanding work environment
Nice to have:
Certified Public Accountant (CPA), CMI IPT Sales Tax School
Master’s degree in taxation
Experience with VAT or GST tax reporting
Advanced large data wrangling skills using any of the following tools: Alteryx, Tableau, Power BI SQL, etc.
