Our client, a leading organisation within the UK rail rolling stock sector, is seeking three Rolling Stock Engineers to join their team on a minimum 6-month contract, working nights at their Derby depot. Roles are inside scope of IR35. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced engineers with strong fault-finding capability and technical reporting skills to support fleet reliability, performance, and maintenance delivery within a busy depot environment. Working 20:00-06:00am (10 hour shift per night), 4 nights on a rolling week.
Job Responsibility
Provide technical support to depot maintenance teams during night shifts
Carry out detailed fault finding and diagnostics on rolling stock systems
Assist maintenance teams with complex and in-depth faults, sharing fault-finding techniques and supporting the effective use of schematics across rolling stock assets
Lead and direct the maintenance shift in relation to engineering issues, technical decision-making, and governance compliance
Support root cause analysis (RCA) investigations to improve fleet reliability
Produce clear, accurate, and robust technical reports following incidents and failures
Liaise with engineering, operations, and reliability teams to ensure timely resolution of defects
Ensure all work is completed in line with safety, quality, and industry standards
Contribute to continuous improvement and reliability growth initiatives
Requirements
Proven experience working on UK rolling stock (mechanical and/or electrical systems)
Strong fault-finding and diagnostic capability across complex systems
Ability to interpret and apply technical drawings and schematics effectively
Experience writing detailed, structured, and technically robust engineering reports
Experience providing technical leadership within a depot or shift environment
Good understanding of safety-critical environments
Excellent communication, mentoring, and problem-solving skills
Degree, HNC, or HND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
Nice to have
Experience supporting fleet operations within a depot environment
Knowledge of reliability engineering and failure analysis techniques
