Build the Future of Transportation in Wyoming. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a passionate and skilled Road Design Engineer to join our team in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In this role, you’ll take on meaningful work that directly impacts the safety, efficiency, and quality of our state’s roadways. As a Road Design Engineer, you'll be responsible for developing, refining, and reviewing highway construction plans that are critical to improving Wyoming’s transportation system. Working under limited supervision, you’ll help bring complex infrastructure projects to life—from initial concept through to contract bidding—ensuring every design meets the highest standards of safety and functionality.
Job Responsibility:
With minimal oversight, develops, refines, and reviews horizontal and vertical alignments
With minimal oversight, establishes the dimensions and geometry of roadway cross-sectional elements to determine and refine excavation, embankment, and haul quantities for roadway construction
Using CADD software and other software packages, designs and detail other roadway features such as guardrail installations, culverts, storm sewer, drainage structures, utility, and right-of-way impacts
Follows applicable State, Federal, and Agency design policies and procedures
With minimal oversight, calculates pay quantities for the materials used to construct roadways and prepares spreadsheets summarizing these quantities
Attends periodic workshops to increase skills and knowledge and train others in new methods and procedures
With minimal oversight, issues intermediate plan sets, and attends inspections
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree (in Engineering)
0-2 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering)
Knowledge of calculus, geometry, algebra, and trigonometry
Knowledge of highway engineering concepts and principles
Knowledge of the WYDOT project/plan development procedures and project flow charts
Skill in technical writing
Skill in communication and time management
Skill in the use of computer applications for office automation
Ability to write reports and specifications
Ability to produce engineering plans and develop cost estimates in a timely manner
Some agencies may require a certificate of registration from the Board of Engineering.
