Job Description

Assists physicians and nursing staff in management of patients with internal reservoirs, fistulas, draining wounds, special wound and skin problems, pressure ulcers, skin ulcers, and incontinence. Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents enterostomal patient education needs and care according to established hospital policies. Demonstrates specific care needs based on knowledge of correct prosthetic ostomy equipment and related products. Promotes patient education and care by assisting in developing and updating programs.

Job Responsibility

  • Assists physicians and nursing staff in management of patients with internal reservoirs, fistulas, draining wounds, special wound and skin problems, pressure ulcers, skin ulcers, and incontinence
  • Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents enterostomal patient education needs and care according to established hospital policies
  • Demonstrates specific care needs based on knowledge of correct prosthetic ostomy equipment and related products
  • Promotes patient education and care by assisting in developing and updating programs
  • Demonstrates procedures for specific care needs and encourages patients to develop confidence with daily routines and techniques for temporary and permanent ostomies of all kinds, and for management of incontinence
  • Recognizes signs of potential post-operative complications and determines appropriate course of action to minimize further trauma to the patient
  • Ensures accurate maintenance of patient records and treats patient records as confidential information
  • Develops and discusses proposed care plans with patient’s attending physician
  • Participates in education for nursing staff
  • assists with developing plans, procedures and programs to meet specific training needs and problems
  • Participates in educational needs of staff
  • Participates in QI (Quality Improvement) programs on a regular and continuing basis
  • Assists in research and development directly related to enterostomal therapy services
  • Assists in investigation of new products, equipment and techniques
  • makes recommendations to nursing director
  • participates in demonstration of products, equipment, and techniques to department staff
  • Maintains established department, unit and hospital policies, procedures and objectives as well as quality assurance, environmental and infection control policies
  • Assists with applying and documentation of specialized equipment relating to wounds
  • Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • preferred Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • One (1) years of acute care experience
  • Current RN licensure permitting work in the State of Arizona or Compact State
  • current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • Knowledge of direct patient care and critical care procedures and techniques, tools, and responses required to ensure optimal patient care
  • Knowledge of care required for internal reservoirs, fistulas, draining wounds, special wound and skin problems, pressure ulcers, skin ulcers, and incontinence
  • Skill in communicating in a clear and concise manner with staff involved in critical care, and physicians to ensure the proper care of patients
  • Skill in training and guiding others in proper wound care
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries or complaints from employees, patients and/or their representatives, and the general public
  • Ability to work with concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions, and to apply mathematical operations to solve or analyze job-related situations
  • Ability to identify positive or negative variances from expected outcomes
