Job Description:

Assists physicians and nursing staff in management of patients with internal reservoirs, fistulas, draining wounds, special wound and skin problems, pressure ulcers, skin ulcers, and incontinence. Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents enterostomal patient education needs and care according to established hospital policies. Demonstrates specific care needs based on knowledge of correct prosthetic ostomy equipment and related products. Promotes patient education and care by assisting in developing and updating programs.

Job Responsibility:

Assists physicians and nursing staff in management of patients with internal reservoirs, fistulas, draining wounds, special wound and skin problems, pressure ulcers, skin ulcers, and incontinence
Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents enterostomal patient education needs and care according to established hospital policies
Demonstrates specific care needs based on knowledge of correct prosthetic ostomy equipment and related products
Promotes patient education and care by assisting in developing and updating programs
Demonstrates procedures for specific care needs and encourages patients to develop confidence with daily routines and techniques for temporary and permanent ostomies of all kinds, and for management of incontinence
Recognizes signs of potential post-operative complications and determines appropriate course of action to minimize further trauma to the patient
Ensures accurate maintenance of patient records and treats patient records as confidential information
Develops and discusses proposed care plans with patient’s attending physician
Participates in education for nursing staff
assists with developing plans, procedures and programs to meet specific training needs and problems
Participates in educational needs of staff
Participates in QI (Quality Improvement) programs on a regular and continuing basis
Assists in research and development directly related to enterostomal therapy services
Assists in investigation of new products, equipment and techniques
makes recommendations to nursing director
participates in demonstration of products, equipment, and techniques to department staff
Maintains established department, unit and hospital policies, procedures and objectives as well as quality assurance, environmental and infection control policies
Assists with applying and documentation of specialized equipment relating to wounds
Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards
Performs related duties as assigned

Requirements:

Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN)
preferred Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)
One (1) years of acute care experience
Current RN licensure permitting work in the State of Arizona or Compact State
current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
Knowledge of direct patient care and critical care procedures and techniques, tools, and responses required to ensure optimal patient care
Knowledge of care required for internal reservoirs, fistulas, draining wounds, special wound and skin problems, pressure ulcers, skin ulcers, and incontinence
Skill in communicating in a clear and concise manner with staff involved in critical care, and physicians to ensure the proper care of patients
Skill in training and guiding others in proper wound care
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries or complaints from employees, patients and/or their representatives, and the general public
Ability to work with concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions, and to apply mathematical operations to solve or analyze job-related situations
Ability to identify positive or negative variances from expected outcomes
define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
