About the Role: We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Respiratory Therapist to provide specialized respiratory care to patients receiving hospice services. This role focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for individuals with life-limiting illnesses. You will deliver direct patient care, educate families and caregivers, and collaborate closely with our interdisciplinary hospice team to ensure holistic, patient-centered support.

Job Responsibility:

  • Assess, implement, and manage individualized respiratory care plans
  • Provide respiratory treatments including oxygen therapy, nebulizer treatments, and airway clearance techniques
  • Monitor patient responses to therapy and adjust care plans in collaboration with the hospice team
  • Ensure patient comfort while supporting symptom management and end-of-life care goals
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers on respiratory equipment and techniques
  • Provide clear, compassionate instruction to optimize comfort and ease anxiety
  • Serve as a trusted resource during emotionally complex moments
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other team members to provide holistic care
  • Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately and in a timely manner
  • Adhere to hospice protocols, state regulations, and industry best practices
  • Act independently and responsibly while maintaining strong communication with the interdisciplinary team
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot respiratory equipment as needed
  • Follow safety guidelines, infection control procedures, and hospice standards of care
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the emotional and physical stressors experienced by patients, families, and colleagues
  • Carry out the mission and values of Blue Ridge Care in all interactions
  • Utilize EMR systems proficiently, including Epic
  • Travel throughout the full hospice service area

Requirements:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy
  • Current Virginia Respiratory Therapist license
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential
  • Minimum of two years of experience, preferably in hospice, palliative care, or home health
  • Strong understanding of end-of-life care principles
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Current CPR certification (BLS or ACLS per hospice guidelines)
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, twist, reach, climb stairs, and assist patients throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Visual acuity sufficient to assess patient condition, including breathing patterns, color, and skin integrity
  • Hearing acuity sufficient to auscultate blood pressure, respond to alarms, and communicate effectively
  • Ability to concentrate amid interruptions, manage multiple tasks, and work effectively over extended shifts
  • Emotional resilience to support patients and families experiencing loss while maintaining professionalism and compassion
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and reliable, insured transportation
  • Travel throughout the full hospice service area
