The Pulmonary Function Technician (PFT) is responsible for performing comprehensive pulmonary diagnostic testing to evaluate lung function and support physician diagnosis and treatment. This role maintains accurate documentation across the pulmonary lab, bronchoscopy lab, and blood gas lab while ensuring high-quality patient care, safety, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative, team-focused approach.
Job Responsibility:
Maintains accurate records for pulmonary lab, bronchoscopy lab and blood gas lab
Performs various testing maneuvers to determine pulmonary mechanics and lung volume studies as ordered by the physician including spirometry, FVL, FVC, MVV, DLCO, Airway resistance and Methacholine challenge testing
Documents all pertinent data on the patient's medical record following completion of any service
Performs diagnostic procedures with the pulmonary physicians such as thoracentesis assists
Demonstrates active participation in filling daily schedules and confirming patient appointments/instructions to maximize productivity
Hands off patient care plan thoroughly and effectively with peers, physician, and nursing staff, maintaining a team focus
Requirements:
BLS – Basic Life Saving Certification
ACLS upon hire or within 3 months
Certified Pulmonary Function Tech (PFT) preferred OR Registered Pulmonary Function Tech (PFT) preferred
Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy
Performs pulmonary function testing as ordered by the physician, including: Spirometry, Flow Volume Loops (FVL), Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Maximum Voluntary Ventilation (MVV), Diffusing Capacity (DLCO), Airway Resistance, Methacholine Challenge Testing
Performs various testing maneuvers to determine pulmonary mechanics and lung volume studies
Assists pulmonary physicians with diagnostic procedures, including thoracentesis support
Recognizes abnormal findings and communicates urgent concerns appropriately
Maintains accurate and complete records for the pulmonary lab, bronchoscopy lab, and blood gas lab
Documents all pertinent patient data in the medical record following completion of services
Ensures compliance with regulatory and departmental standards
Actively participates in managing daily schedules to maximize lab productivity
Confirms patient appointments and provides clear pre-test instructions
Ensures timely flow of patients through the department
Provides thorough and effective handoff communication regarding patient care plans to peers, physicians, and nursing staff
Maintains a collaborative, team-focused environment
Supports quality improvement initiatives within the department
