Job Responsibility

  • Educates the patient and family about the patient's illness and provides information about community support groups and other resources
  • Evaluates respiratory care policies and procedures based on patient outcomes, current research, and best practices
  • Responds to codes and calls for emergent assistance
  • Assesses patient condition and delivers appropriate treatment
  • Delivers and assesses response to ordered therapy per plan of care
  • Monitors, documents, and communicates patient condition

  • Provides patient care in a mobile environment to patients being transported to/from Children's Wisconsin
  • Responsible for providing quality assessment, therapeutic interventions, and clinical expertise to the neonatal, pediatric, and adult population in the transport environment
  • In conjunction with the Transport Respiratory Therapist, acts as a resource hospital wide for patent care standards and pre-code recognition
  • Patient care is provided in accordance with established policies and procedures, medical protocols, and/or direct online consultation with the appropriate medical control physician within the transport environment (ambulance, helicopter, fixed wing)
  • Functions as a team leader when a physician is not present on the transport
  • Assesses patient and provides interventions according to PALS, NRP, and ACLS protocols in an emergent situation, or after consulting with medical control physician and/or referring provider
  • Exercises independent judgment in situations when sudden clinical changes occur
  • Understands and implements necessary interventions and their expected outcomes
  • Provides a safe environment while maximizing clinical expertise during interfacility transports
  • Collaborates with other team members in the planning and provision of optimal patient care during the transport process including patient placement
