This position supports the research of environmental engineering faculty. The Research Technician will perform water treatment experiments to evaluate the performance of coagulation and powdered activated carbon to remove dissolved organic matter and disinfection byproduct precursors. Experiments will also be performed to evaluate dissolved organic matter leaching from burned soils and sediments. Initial tasks will also involve examining volatile organic compound sorption and desorption from plastic pipe materials. Analytical chemistry techniques such as GC-MS and LC-MS will be used.
Job Responsibility:
Perform water treatment experiments to evaluate performance of coagulation and powdered activated carbon to remove dissolved organic matter and disinfection byproduct precursors
Evaluate dissolved organic matter leaching from burned soils and sediments
Examine volatile organic compound sorption and desorption from plastic pipe materials
Perform water quality analyses including total organic carbon analysis, UV spectroscopy, fluorescence, GC-MS, and LC-MS
Additional duties as assigned by the department
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree
<1 year related experience
Previous experience performing water treatment experiments and water quality analyzers including TOC, GC-MS, and LC-MS analysis
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word
Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills
Excellent organizational skills
Demonstrated time management, punctuality, and priority setting skills
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to interpret and apply complex policies and regulations
High analytical capability, with ability to identify issues, compare data, and resolve discrepancies
