The Research Support Officer plays a vital role in supporting the Research and Facility Services (RFS) team to deliver high-quality operational support to SAHMRI researchers. This position helps ensure the effective management, maintenance and compliance of research infrastructure and equipment across the Institute. Working closely with the Research Infrastructure Manager, corporate teams and a diverse research community, this role is key to maintaining safe, efficient, and well functioning laboratory environments. You will also liaise with service providers, suppliers and external research partners.
Job Responsibility:
Providing scientific and research support to SAHMRI researchers
Respond to laboratory operations queries from the SAHMRI community
Manage general laboratory equipment and coordinate preventative maintenance
Assist with troubleshooting and confirming equipment faults
Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records in line with regulatory requirements
Coordinate the movement and disposal of laboratory equipment across SAHMRI sites
Liaise with suppliers, instrument engineers and researchers in the event of equipment failures
Support the SAHMRI Consumables Store to ensure adequate stock levels and expiry management
Support specialised facilities, including the Core Facilities, Central Washup Facility, emergency shower/eyewash stations and scientific vending machines
Assist with audits (e.g., laboratory space, waste disposal, cold storage, gas bottles, assets) in accordance with relevant standards
Requirements:
Bachelor of Science, or other relevant qualification or experience
Minimum 3 years' experience in a laboratory management role, preferably in a medical research environment
Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment is highly desirable
Broad scientific and technical knowledge
Experience in specialised equipment and scientific techniques is highly desirable
Highly developed attention to detail and demonstrated ability to keep accurate records
Ability to work in a flexible, well organised and efficient manner
Highly developed problem-solving skills
Capacity to liaise effectively and relate well to research staff and students
Knowledge of laboratory practices and documentation
Knowledge of relevant ISO, WHS, and OGTR requirements
Understanding of Work Health and Safety and Quality Management practices and procedures
Nice to have:
Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment is highly desirable
Experience in specialised equipment and scientific techniques is highly desirable
