Job Description:

Technical Associate I position in the Drosophila genetics & genomics laboratory of Professor Daven Presgraves in the Department of Biology, University of Rochester.

Job Responsibility:

  • Under general guidance and with latitude for exercising independent technical judgment, performs research related activities limited in scope and complexity in a specialized field
  • Provides direct research support and offers opportunity for future experimental and scientific development
  • This work will support the planning, design, and execution of experiments as well as direct studies
  • The Research Specialist will use existing protocols and will collaborate with other laboratories
  • Works independently with occasional input on modifying, varying or adapting standard laboratory procedures to meet special needs of research projects
  • Responsibilities involve aiding the PI in the conduct of genetics, molecular biology, and genomics research

  • Research responsibilities include conducting experimental work in molecular biology and Drosophila fruitfly genetics
  • Strong molecular biology expertise, trouble-shooting skills, and ability to work independently are essential
  • Commonly used methods in the lab include: DNA and RNA isolation

  • quantitative PCR
  • gel electrophoresis
  • DNA sequencing and analysis
  • restriction digests
  • cloning, transformation, site-directed mutagenesis, and transgene construction
  • and confocal microscopy
  • The Drosophila work may involve experimental genetics crosses, tissue dissections, and data collection
  • Molecular biology work may involve assaying gene expression, protein-DNA interactions, generating transgene reagents, and/or immunocytology
  • Personnel management duties involve training and overseeing undergraduate workers responsible for dishwashing and/or maintenance of the fly stock collection

  • Data management duties include maintaining organized laboratory notebooks, transcription of data from notebooks to organized and archived computer files, and occasional preparation of data summary reports

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • 1 year of related work experience required involving direct assistance to researchers or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiarity with MS Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Generate and organize large sets of data, strains, and plasmids, and should be familiar with all aspects of a laboratory to effectively help organize the lab
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed
  • Excellent organization skills to help coordinate a number of projects, and the skills to help train inexperienced personnel
