Reality Labs Research is seeking an optical-fiber sensor research intern to develop new distributed sensing solutions for robotics applications. The successful candidate will join Meta's remote-sensing team working at the Caltech campus in Pasadena, CA. Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.
Job Responsibility:
Explore trade space of remote optical-fiber sensors both experimentally and with simulations, define system requirements
Design, build, and characterize remote optical-fiber sensors
Design, build, and validate optical-fiber sensor testbeds
Perform feasibility studies for sensor system miniaturization
Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of research ideas and plans
Prepare reports and presentations on the results of experiments and modeling efforts
Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment and facilities
Attend relevant seminars, workshops, and conferences to expand knowledge and skills
Requirements:
Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree program in the field of Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics or a related field
Experience with distributed optical-fiber sensing techniques, including, but not limited to optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR), fiber-Bragg-grating (FBG) shape sensing, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), or phase-OTDR
Experience with optical fiber technology, including, but not limited to, single-mode and multi-mode fibers, multi-core fibers, FBG fibers, enhanced-Rayleigh-scattering fibers, optical switches, or optical circulators
Experience with laser technology, including, but not limited to, gain-switched lasers, fiber lasers, tunable lasers, or VCSELs
Experience with real-time instrument control
Experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, or C++
Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Intent to return to degree program after the completion of the internship/co-op
Nice to have:
Experience with optical fiber methods, such as splicing, fiber connectorization, or fiber transmission measurements
Experience with other coherence-based optical sensing techniques, such as optical coherence tomography, or FMCW LIDAR
Experience with finite-element modeling in Ansys, Comsol, or other similar tools
Experience with optical fiber scattering mechanisms, such as Rayleigh, Raman, or Brillouin scattering
Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences
Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment
