Job Description:

Be part of a pioneering initiative at CSIRO’s Data61, contributing to the National Quantum Computing Testbed — a new $5.9M facility at the University of Queensland. We’re seeking a Research Scientist/Engineer to help develop next-generation quantum technologies. In this role, you’ll work within our Quantum Systems Team to drive research that lowers the barriers to quantum computing adoption, develop secure, scalable quantum software and hybrid quantum-classical systems, and engage with partners across industry, academia, and government to deliver real-world solutions. Help shape the future of quantum computing in Australia through open-access innovation and responsible tech development.

Job Responsibility:

  • Conduct innovative research in quantum software platforms, focusing on quantum compilers, algorithms, and hardware-agnostic solutions
  • Collaborate across CSIRO and with external academic and industry partners to drive impactful research and technology development
  • Produce high-quality research outputs, including publications, patents, and technical presentations at conferences
  • Develop and demonstrate research prototypes at key events, applying design thinking and impact-focused methodologies
  • Analyse and manage complex datasets using relevant quantum and data science techniques
  • Engage in continuous professional development and adhere to CSIRO’s policies on conduct, safety, and diversity
  • Support proposal development and contribute to new research directions aligned with strategic priorities

Requirements:

  • A PhD (or equivalent research experience) in Physics, Computer Science, Quantum Computing, or a related field
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct original and innovative research, developing novel scientific approaches
  • Proven track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, with contributions to grants or patent applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting research at conferences
  • A history of scientific creativity and a willingness to explore new ideas and methods

Nice to have:

  • Foundational knowledge of quantum computing, algorithms, and their applications
  • Understanding of software engineering principles, including compiler design
  • Awareness of data security considerations in quantum and classical systems
  • Experience developing prototypes related to quantum computing or software research
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team
What we offer:
  • up to 15.4% superannuation
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Diversity and inclusion initiatives
