Job Description:

As part of the Northern cattle production team, the successful candidate will contribute to research projects that are focused on delivering solutions for the livestock industry, in relation to reducing methane emissions from grazing cattle and improving productivity. The role will involve you working with cattle in pen and paddock environments and include preparing feed and diet supplements along with maintaining and cleaning the animal facilities, operation of cattle respiration system, calibrating and servicing remote sensing equipment and data collection.

Job Responsibility:

  • Under general supervision, perform routine animal handling or operational tasks requiring skills which have been developed through experience or training
  • Design and perform routine protocols to achieve research objectives
  • Collect samples according to defined standards and ensure samples are stored and identified correctly
  • Identify and report anomalies and co-design solutions where appropriate
  • Assist in establishing experiments, monitor, summarise and record results and typically are required to maintain a record of experimental results
  • Design new processes or apparatus by adapting existing techniques and components to meet special circumstances or undertake modifications to methods requiring some level of innovation
  • Respond courteously and efficiently to requests for their services, keep clients informed about progress and redirect requests to appropriate staff when required
  • Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives

Requirements:

  • A tertiary level degree or equivalent relevant work experience in livestock husbandry
  • Demonstrated livestock experience
  • general husbandry, understanding animal behaviour
  • Demonstrated ability for accurate record keeping
  • Demonstrated skills in use of data entry and analysis software
  • A current driver’s licence
