The Catalyst Lab at Microsoft Research is seeking a Research Intern to work on applied studies of power system behavior under extreme conditions, such as space weather and geomagnetic disturbances.

Job Responsibility

  • Work on applied studies of power system behavior under extreme conditions, such as space weather and geomagnetic disturbances
  • Use existing power-system and physics-based models to analyze system responses, assess operational risk, and study the impact of external drivers (e.g., solar storms) on grid reliability
  • Run simulations, analyze results, and connect physical phenomena to real-world power system operations
  • Collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's, master's or PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
  • Interest in power systems, energy infrastructure, or space/environmental effects on engineered systems
  • Comfortable with coding and data analysis (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Julia)
