The Catalyst Lab at Microsoft Research is seeking a Research Intern to work on applied studies of power system behavior under extreme conditions, such as space weather and geomagnetic disturbances.
Job Responsibility:
Work on applied studies of power system behavior under extreme conditions, such as space weather and geomagnetic disturbances
Use existing power-system and physics-based models to analyze system responses, assess operational risk, and study the impact of external drivers (e.g., solar storms) on grid reliability
Run simulations, analyze results, and connect physical phenomena to real-world power system operations
Collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community
Requirements:
Currently enrolled in a bachelor's, master's or PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
Interest in power systems, energy infrastructure, or space/environmental effects on engineered systems
Comfortable with coding and data analysis (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Julia)
