Toshiba Europe Ltd has been at the forefront of quantum technology research, particularly quantum communications and quantum key distribution (QKD), for over two decades. Our research underpins deployed Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems and continues to drive innovation in next‑generation quantum‑secure networking. An established leader in photonic integrated circuit (PIC) research for QKD, Toshiba is accelerating the transition of PIC-based QKD devices from lab to market. Our mission is to deliver on the promise of scalable PIC-based manufacturing and enable globally deployable quantum-secure communication networks. We invite applications for a Research Engineer position to strengthen our R&D in high-performance photonic integrated devices for the next generation QKD systems. In this exciting role, the successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of novel market-ready PIC-based QKD modules, driving key pilot development activities such as system integration, optimization of device yield and reliability, supply chain readiness, and certification.
Job Responsibility:
Develop and refine scalable PIC technologies tailored for QKD
Characterize QKD PIC performance and perform yield analysis and optimization
Conduct environmental and reliability and ageing assessments
Devise and implement innovative approaches to QKD PIC packaging and system-level integration
Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to integrate the QKD PIC devices into platforms compatible with commercial requirements
Interface QKD PIC modules with high‑speed RF electronics, FPGA systems, and digital processing pipelines
Draft device specifications and develop and maintain documentation for optical, electrical and mechanical subsystems
Analyse experimental data and communicate key findings
Contribute to establish a robust supply chain for the sustainable development of PIC‑based QKD devices
Collaborate with industrial partners in the UK and Japan
Requirements:
Degree in Physics, Electronic Engineering, Photonics, or a closely related field
Proven ability to operate complex optical/electronic experimental setups
Experience with statistical analysis, yield and reliability assessment, system integration, troubleshooting, and data analysis
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Enthusiasm for learning new skills and working in a multidisciplinary team
Nice to have:
Strong project management skills
Knowledge of QKD, quantum optics, or quantum communications
Experience with compliance assessment, and standards and certification
Several years of hands‑on experience in optical, quantum, or coherent optical communication systems
Experience with electronics design (PCB development, FPGA programming, high‑speed electronics)
