Job Description

The Research Associate – Atmospheric Sciences will be part of the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership (AAPP), a research program funded through the Antarctic Science Collaboration Initiative of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The AAPP brings together government and non-government entities to deliver a significant part of the national Antarctic science program, including research on the role of the Antarctic region in the global climate system and the implications for marine ecosystems. The Research Associate will be a member of AAPP’s Theme 1: Antarctica’s Influence on Climate and Sea Level and sit within the Project 1: Atmosphere team. The Research Associate will advance AAPP’s mission to improve the Australian climate and weather models by integrating new insights from recent Southern Ocean field campaigns into the next generation climate model. The position will address the persistent cloud-radiative bias over the Southern Ocean - one of the most influential and uncertain components of climate projections.

Job Responsibility

  • Implement new ice nucleation parameterisations into the Australian climate model ACCESS
  • Evaluate model changes against state-of-the art observations from the landmark Cloud Aerosol and Precipitation Experiment at Kennaook/Cape Grim CAPE-K) field campaign
  • Undertake high-quality research and scholarly activities and publish research findings
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links inside the University and locally and nationally

Requirements

  • A four-year tertiary qualification in a relevant field and/or equivalent qualifications and/or professional experience
  • A demonstrated ability and understanding of research in the field of atmospheric science and in particular, cloud and aerosol microphysics, demonstrated by a strong academic record
  • Experience running the ACCESS climate or weather models, including debugging and making source code changes
  • Strong analytical experience, including experience handling large amounts of data efficiently, within high-performance computing environments
  • A record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive networks with the discipline, profession, industry (where relevant) and wider community
  • Willingness to undertake a remote medical assessment for working in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean if required
