Position Summary/ Department Summary: Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of routine and specialized laboratory experiments, specimen preparations and experimental procedures for the purpose of research. Assists in the use of specialized laboratory equipment and analysis of data generated by this equipment. Specifically, the research assistant will be expected to manage the laboratory’s wild-type and transgenic mouse colonies, will set up matings and will work with mice on a routine basis. He/she/they will also carry out various laboratory procedures following established protocols, including genotyping, RT-PCR, ELISA assays, flow cytometry, primary cell cultures, and immunohistochemistry. He/she/they will be expected to carefully track and record experimental results, analyze data using basic statistics, and present results.
Job Responsibility:
Perform a variety of routine and specialized laboratory experiments, specimen preparations and experimental procedures for the purpose of research
Assist in the use of specialized laboratory equipment and analysis of data generated by this equipment
Manage the laboratory’s wild-type and transgenic mouse colonies
Set up matings and work with mice on a routine basis
Carry out various laboratory procedures following established protocols, including genotyping, RT-PCR, ELISA assays, flow cytometry, primary cell cultures, and immunohistochemistry
Carefully track and record experimental results, analyze data using basic statistics, and present results
Perform a variety of routine laboratory and murine experiments and procedures, utilizing standard laboratory equipment, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy
Assist in troubleshooting procedures if experimental results are unexpected or quality of specimens is poor
Maintain records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed
Maintain equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner
Sterilize and clean glassware, prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures
Inventory supplies and alert supervisor to needed supplies, or mix standard reagents
Process orders for supplies and/or animals
Attend courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials
Help maintain murine colonies and assist in murine experiments
Carry out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols
Conduct literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.
Attend courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information
Contribute to the team within and between departments and organizations
Requirements:
Bachelors Degree is required
