Job Description:

This is a professional position at the intermediate level, fully operational level of the Research Administrator series. The incumbent applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments / projects / tasks of moderate scope and complexity; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. Research Administrator/Fund Manager uses accounting skills to independently prepare and manage research proposals, awards and transactions related to contract and grant management (pre and post award), and maintain contract and grant records in compliance with institutional research sponsor policies. This position requires exceptional customer service skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with both internal and external units that include office colleagues, members of the department, faculty, and central offices. Pre-award support will be required for all funding mechanisms and all sponsors. Assignments may include multiple PIs, department recharge centers, multiple funding sources, multiple institutions, and multiple sites. The Research Administrator manages proposals and awards of diverse scope where analysis of data requires thorough understanding of complex regulations and requirements. Post-award management includes using strong analytical skills for allocation and expense monitoring, understanding of agency-specific requirements, detailed and timely reporting, and advisement to faculty.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines
  • Ability to perform moderately complex financial analysis and customized reporting
  • Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration Pre-Award and Post-Award
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Knowledge of common sponsored award mechanisms and skills to gather and analyze resource data from various sources
  • Working knowledge of or familiarity with other UCSD Core administrative computer systems, such as Kuali, UCPath, Concur, and Oracle Financial preferred
  • Familiarity with all types of award mechanisms, including grants, contracts, subcontracts, cooperative agreements
  • Background screen required

Nice to have:

  • Pre and post award experience
  • Experience working with researchers and faculty in an area of health and medicine - preferably, bench to bedside clinical trials
  • NIH/CIRM/NASA/NSF sponsor experience preferred
