Job Description:

We're seeking a skilled Staff Software Engineer with leadership ambition, to join our Graph team. This role requires significant experience designing, implementing, and maintaining SaaS with high traffic load. This role requires several years of experience directly managing scalable and reliable Elasticsearch and/or Opensearch clusters. You will own epics from initial requirements gathering (PRD) through to successful completion, collaborating with stakeholders to ensure solutions meet market needs. You will also focus on the request latency when implementing features, to make sure our customer's applications have good performance.

Job Responsibility:

  • Architect, implement, and optimize Opensearch indexing and query pipelines for scalability and reliability
  • Design and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and failover strategies for Opensearch clusters
  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution of complex search-related incidents and performance bottlenecks
  • Drive automation for cluster provisioning, upgrades, and configuration management (e.g., with Terraform, Ansible, or Kubernetes)
  • Mentor engineers on Opensearch internals, query optimization, and troubleshooting
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate business requirements into robust search features
  • Own capacity planning and cost optimization for search infrastructure
  • Author technical documentation and best practices for search development and operations

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Computer Science or engineering preferred) or equivalent work experience
  • Significant experience designing, implementing, and maintaining SaaS with high traffic load

  • Design and own the architecture for running managed services (including VPC support), backed by Aiven-managed data systems (Kafka®, OpenSearch®, PostgreSQL®, and other technologies)
  • Ensure reliability and resilience: design failover mechanisms, deployment patterns, upgrade strategies, and observability for metrics, logs, and traces
  • Develop and maintain ingestion pipelines and connectors (primarily in Python) to collect and synchronize metadata across Aiven services
  • Implement identity and access control synchronization, aligning Aiven’s Teams and Roles with catalog-level RBAC/ABAC policies across APIs and UIs
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, Security, and Platform teams to define SLOs, readiness checklists, and operational runbooks
  • Iteratively build the product 0 from PoC through LA to GA — balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
  • Contribute across the stack where needed: Python for orchestration, Java for service improvements and fixes, and React/TypeScript for Console experience improvements
  • Coach and mentor engineers, set technical standards, and shape the engineering culture for the new product line
